FretsnReeds has invested in the best equipment to deliver your session with the sessions held on iMacs with multi screens connected to 200GB internet using, focusrite Saffire audio interfaces and studio quality microphones.

Phones and tablets are quick and easy to pick up and use and for teaching, but you are likely to be limited to their built-in cameras and microphones, which can be basic. The small screen size may also be an issue. See below for the best experience you should investigate the recommended hardware.

Choosing the best device for your lesson

Students need to be able to log on to a zoom session. For this you will need a webcam and a quiet space to have your session.

A laptop or desktop PC or Mac may be preferable. These allow you to use an ethernet cable, which can offer a more stable internet connection than WiFi. Laptops often have a mic and camera built in, while desktop users may need to connect these. Both allow you to benefit from a larger screen or monitor.

Your microphone and speakers will need to work together, so experiment with positioning and levels to avoid feedback. There are two audio settings to adjust – your computer’s basic input level and the app’s own settings.

Headphones (preferably Bluetooth to avoid being tethered by a cable) will eliminate feedback, but they may affect how you hear your own instrument.

How long should your session be?

Musical instrument lessons usually last a 1/2hr and for beginners this appears to be the most satisfactory balance between delivering quality content and not overloading the student. Longer lessons can be requested for EDM and songwriting or tune crafting.

I have been a student of Cliff’s since the autumn of 2018 coaching me from being an absolute beginner with little musical skills to a competent improver. Cliff’s enthusiasm for music is infectious, inspiring his students to explore music and enjoy the knowledge and skills he has given them.

Great teacher with a sense of humour.

Judith

Excellent and helpful. His knowledge about all things musical never ceases to amaze me. He also has been a good friend. The first person I will go to with any problem with Guitars or recently with DAW’s.

David Evans
